Episode 14: Two Sisters Soap
Who doesn't love a sugar lip scrub that once it has exfoliated your lips, you can eat it, or how about a pre-toilet spray with the name of #2? Sandy Nellesen of Two Sisters Soap certainly has a sense of humor but that does not take away from the quality that she prides herself in with all her products. As she says, “We are so conscientious about quality.”
Eight years ago Sandy attended a soap making class and since then she's been handcrafting bar and liquid soap, body scrub, lip balm, body butter and everything else that allows you to treat yourself and your skin. Sandy has perfected her own recipes and hand picks each fragrance, her grandkids skin is her testing ground. “We like to use goats milk because it's creamy and has nutrients for your skin,” she said. She also explained she likes to source local products, like Cox's Honey for her beeswax in lip balm.
Two Sister's Soap does not have a storefront. Sandy sells the product on-line or out of her home. Four days a year, in the Spring and Fall, she hosts The Gathering Market, a vendor fair that features handmade products. “Hand crafted small businesses fall through the cracks, and I wanted a place to feature these kind of hard working businesses,” she said. In addition, she transports her product, with help from her husband, to a vendor fair in Utah where her and her sister set up for a week and serve her Utah customers. Her unique videos on social media feature the products and she demonstrates the benefits they provide.
Sandy's role in the business includes everything from chief recipe creator to packaging. She's pretty much a one woman show and produces about 80% of all the product out of her home. One of her biggest challenges is keeping up with demand so that requires some late nights “cooking”. She said it isn't unusual for her to pass her husband in the morning when he's getting up and she's just headed to bed. When asked about what advice she'd give to individuals considering self-employment she said, “You better be ready to work and you have to love what you are doing.”
“I just love making someone smile, our motto is to treat yourself better, you deserve it,” she said.
